Episode 42 | Climbing serves as a metaphor for personal growth and resilience with Andy Cross

Jul 2, 2025

In this conversation, Roxana and Andy Cross discuss the innovative approach to climbing, which combines psychotherapy with bouldering to enhance mental health and well-being.

They explore the findings of a pilot study done in higher education that demonstrated significant reductions in anxiety and depression among participants, as well as the importance of psychoeducation and the somatic connection between mind and body.

The discussion highlights the accessibility of bouldering, the metaphors it provides for personal growth, and the potential for community engagement in mental health initiatives.

Andy Cross is a registered social worker and case worker in the University of Cumbria’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Team. He is passionate about the role of adventure and nature-based therapies. Once he completes the final stages of the PGDip in psychotherapy and person-centred counselling, he aims to blend these approaches into his clinical practice. He is also a co-founder of ClimbWell, which seeks to combine psychotherapy and climbing to support individuals facing mental health challenges and enhance the wellbeing of people in the broader Carlisle community.
